Shopify True Profit Per Order Calculator
Updated .
This calculator shows your real net profit and margin on a single Shopify order after product cost, shipping, packaging, payment processing, and ad spend. It separates contribution margin (before ads) from net profit (after ads) — the two numbers that decide what you can afford to pay to acquire a customer.

How this is calculated
Net profit is order revenue minus every cost that scales with the order. Fixed overhead — rent, salaries, your Shopify subscription, software you pay for monthly — is deliberately excluded, because those costs do not change when you sell one more unit. What you get is the amount each additional order contributes.
Two numbers matter here. Net profit is what you keep after advertising. Contribution margin is what you keep before advertising, and it is the hard ceiling on what you can afford to pay to acquire a customer.
Questions merchants ask
Should I include my Shopify subscription in this?
No. Subscription fees are fixed monthly overhead, not a per-order cost. Including them here distorts the per-order number and makes low-volume months look worse than they are. Work out per-order profit first, then check that total monthly contribution covers your fixed costs.
What payment processing rate should I enter?
Read it off your own payout statement rather than a published rate card. Your effective rate varies with card type, currency, region and whether you use a third-party gateway, and it is usually higher than the headline number.
How do I work out ad cost per order?
Take total ad spend for a period and divide by total orders in that same period — not just orders the ad platform claims credit for. Platform-attributed numbers overlap and will understate your real cost per order.
Why is my margin healthy but my bank balance shrinking?
Usually returns, inventory being bought faster than it sells, or fixed overhead outgrowing contribution. Per-order profit can be fine while cash is consumed by stock sitting in a warehouse.
