Return Cost Calculator
Updated .
A return is not a cancelled sale — it's a sale that cost you money. This calculator totals shipping both ways, handling, unrecovered fees, and markdown on resold items to find the true cost per return, and how many profitable orders it takes to absorb one.

Worth having in writing before you decide on free returns or a restocking fee.
How this is calculated
The instinctive way to think about a return is that you give the money back and end up where you started. You do not. The outbound shipping and packaging are already spent and unrecoverable, you pay again to bring the item home, someone has to inspect and repack it, and payment processors typically keep at least part of their fee on a refunded order.
Then there is the product itself. Some returns come back sealed and go straight back on the shelf. Others come back opened, worn or damaged and sell at a markdown or not at all. The resellable percentage and markdown inputs capture that gap, which for apparel is often the single largest component of return cost.
The most useful figure here is how many profitable orders it takes to absorb one return. It reframes returns from a customer service problem into an acquisition problem: every return means you have to go out and win several more customers just to stand still.
Questions merchants ask
What is a normal ecommerce return rate?
It varies enormously by category, and averages quoted across all of ecommerce are not much use for a specific store. Apparel and footwear run far higher than most categories because of fit; consumables and hard goods run much lower. Compare against your own trend over time rather than against a general benchmark.
Should I charge for return shipping?
It reduces return cost per order but usually reduces conversion too, so the honest way to decide is to test it. Enter the return shipping as zero here to see the ceiling on what free returns can possibly cost you, then weigh that against the conversion lift you would give up.
Do restocking fees help?
They recover a portion of the handling cost, but they generate customer friction that can outlast the transaction. Many stores get further by reducing the causes of returns — better sizing guidance, more accurate photography, clearer specifications — than by charging for them.
What is the cheapest way to reduce return costs?
Usually fixing the top return reason rather than changing the return policy. Tag returns by reason for a month; the results are typically concentrated in two or three fixable causes, and product page changes cost nothing per order once made.
